Chicken, storks, and Mexico :) – Letter from the studio, August 2025

The email letter came a little late this month, as last week (when I was supposed to write it) I’ve been unexpectedly busy reviewing a contract proposal for my very first comic book! ✨ (not offically signed yet so staying cautiously optimistic, but it looks like it’s really going to happen 😎)

Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, enjoy some birds and some travel inspiration 😊

Art in August: Lots of chickens in my sketchbook :)

I’ve been trying to form an almost-daily drawing practice, not very successfully for now, but I’ve drawn some chicken, so it was already worth it :)

From my camera roll: Two storks, from my window!

The hay was freshly cut and drying in loose heaps. In addition to the usual crows I was startled to see one, no two! storks stalking the meadow that I see from the window of my workshop 🤩

Have to tell you about: Dia de los Muertos

Next October-November we plan to travel to Mexico! We chose the dates because I thought it would be interesting to be there for the celebration of Dia de los Murtos (Day of the Dead), and I’ve been researching where to best experience it.

Among the sources I found, this article on the travel blog “Mes p’tits bouts du monde” and its companion video (link in the article) stood out to me :)

I like that the locations are shown on a colourful, illustrated map!

The video is a bit rambling but quite informative and, well, authentic (trend-word, but sometimes it really applies 😅). The host (and writer) attended dia de los muertos some years ago, and stays moved by her experience; and the interview guest has been living in Mexico for several years and has a Mexican family – so I find they give an interesting perspective.

Usually I feature English- or occasionally German-language content or people, this time it’s in French, sorry ;) You can still enjoy the photos, and the map (and maybe let some tool translate the article) :)

That’s it for this month!

As always, if there’s anything you would like to ask, something you would like to read about in the next letter, or anything really – send me an email at hello@reinekurth.com! It would be lovely to hear from you 😊.

With love,

Reine
