Inspiration case study: Fumio Obata

Another inspiration from the world of comics, but I had to include him because of one specific point.

Although I could do many more “inspiration case studies” for Tom Froese’s ‘The Style Class: Work out your illustration style in a daily project’, I don’t want to go overboard – and start the actual project ;) However I felt something was missing in the 3 studies I had originally selected (Linnea Sterte, Claire Wendling and Mareikje Vogler), something that I want to keep in mind while doing my project, and my work in general – something that strikes me in Fumio Obata‘s work:

Artist: Fumio Obata
Technique or genre of illustration: Drawing, Painting (traditional or/and digital)
Context: Comic

(couldn’t help mentioning 2 more points under “also”, that contribute to making Obata’s art so compelling to me ;))

I first came upon Obata’s art at the Maison des Auteurs (Authors’ House) in Angoulême. Every year there’s an exhibition of the works of the authors currently in residency, starting during the renowned Angoulême Comics Festival. So it must have been in 2009, according to the Maison des Auteurs’ article about Obata’s residency. At the time, though already using a digital camera for a few years, I still had quite conservative photo-taking habits (from the days film and development on paper were expensive necessities) 😁️ so I dont’ know exactly what was exhibited – but I remember the lasting impression it made on me :)

OK, now onto the illustration project!

But wait, no drawing yet 😅️. First let’s decide on some contraints: the theme, the technique, the context, and a list of 26 words (from A to Z) to illustrate
